The IPL 2023 has been plagued by injuries, with KL Rahul being the most recent player to experience a serious setback. While fielding in the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the LSG captain suffered an injury. He was pulled off the pitch during the second over itself, and he did not return to the game until much later when he walked to the no. 11 crease.
The batter has finally acknowledged that the thigh injury will prevent him from playing the remainder of the IPL. But what really hurts is that he won’t be going to England with Team India’s squad for the World Test Championship final, which runs from June 7 to 11. However, the BCCI has already considered his replacement and Suryakumar Yadav is most likely the choice.
BCCI Source said
“While it hasn’t been decided officially yet, Surya has been asked to keep his UK Visa ready,” a BCCI source told The Times of India.
Along with Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan, Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, and Navdeep Saini will be traveling as the reserves.
Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, and Navdeep Saini were already listed as standby players for the WTC final matchup against Australia. Suryakumar Yadav has now been added to that list.
In his career thus far, Suryakumar Yadav has only participated in one Test Match. He failed to impress as he made his Border Gavaskar Trophy debut against Australia in Nagpur, scoring only 8 runs. The batsman, however, has rediscovered his form in the IPL 2023, recording two back-to-back fifty-plus scores in two 200+ run chases.
In an Instagram post, KL Rahul announced that he would need thigh surgery to repair his injury, ruling himself out of contention for the WTC final as well as the IPL 2023.
India is in a very tricky situation with so many injuries in recent times. Jaydev Unadkat has also injured himself during the practice session for Lucknow Super Giants. Australia have an upper hand going into the WTC Finals.
