Afghanistan scripted history yesterday by an extraordinary win against Pakistan at Chepauk in Chennai. For the first time in history, the Afghans set the Men in Green ablaze securing an eight-wicket victory with just one over to spare. Having the toss, Pakistan opted to bat initially and set a target of 282 runs. Team Afghanistan, displaying on its batting prowess took a calm approach and successfully chased off the target while claiming a celebrated win.
Aakash Chopra’s instinct
Ahead of the win, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra remarked that Pakistan faced a similar situation in Ahmedabad while Babar Azam and Co. had some other plans to lead their way further into the tournament. He stated “Pakistan came to India with the plan of making it 7-1. That couldn’t happen, it became 8-0. That was the story in Ahmedabad. Pakistan wanted to make it 8-0 against Afghanistan, that too didn’t happen. It has become 7-1 because Afghanistan have defeated Pakistan.
Chopra went on to add that Pakistan should have won that game given the fact that they won the toss, got the chance to bat first, and even posted an above par convincing score. He also relied on the deterioration of Pakistan’s quality bowlers.
Can’t be called as an upset: Chopra
The former cricketer also drew attention to Afghanistan’s potential to win any match as it did earlier against England. He asserted that the team cannot be taken lightly after it has registered two consecutive wins against teams like England and Pakistan.
“We can’t even call it an upset now. How can it be an upset- they defeated England and they have defeated Pakistan by eight wickets. They have done an amazing job. Dhoti phad ke rumal kar diya hai.” After a well deserved break, Afghanistan will face Sri Lanka in its next on October 30 in Pune.
