Tim Southee Faces Reprimand for ICC Code of Conduct Breach

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee received a reprimand for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during a T20 World Cup Group C match against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. Southee’s actions were reviewed by the match officials, leading to this disciplinary action. The ICC emphasized the importance of maintaining the sport’s integrity and adherence to its code of conduct, reinforcing the expectations for player behavior during international competitions. This reprimand serves as a reminder for all players to uphold these standards.

The Issue and ICC’s Official Statement Regarding the Issue:

The incident occurred in the 18th over of New Zealand’s innings when, after being dismissed, Tim Southee struck a hand sanitizer dispenser on his way to the dressing room. Consequently, one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record, marking his first offense in 24 months. A formal hearing was unnecessary as Southee admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Officials.

On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Alex Wharf, along with third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Michael Gough, filed the charge against Southee. Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can lead to a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

After that, the ICC issued an official statement on Friday announcing that Tim Southee received an official reprimand. During Wednesday’s match, Southee was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and support personnel, related to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.”
