Shikhar Dhawan Retires: A Glorious Career Comes to an End
Shikhar Dhawan, one of India’s most beloved cricketers, has announced his retirement from all forms of international and domestic cricket.Â
The news, shared on August 24, 2024, marks the end of an illustrious career that saw Dhawan rise to prominence as a vital part of India’s cricketing successes over the past decade.
Known as “Gabbar” on the field, Dhawan’s charismatic presence and explosive batting made him a mainstay in the Indian cricket team.
He debuted in 2010 and quickly established himself as a key player across formats.
His most memorable contribution came during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, where he earned the title “Mr. ICC” for his exceptional performances.Â
Dhawan’s ability to shine in high-pressure tournaments made him a fan favourite and a crucial asset to the team.
Tributes from the Cricketing World
Following the announcement of his retirement, the cricketing fraternity took to social media to honour Dhawan’s remarkable journey.
Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya was among the first to share his sentiments.
In an Instagram story, Pandya wrote, “Only the best for you Shiki paa. Congratulations on a wonderful career.”
Former cricketers Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer, and Saeed Anwar also expressed their admiration.
Gambhir tweeted, “Congratulations Shiki on a fantastic career! I know you will spread the same joy through everything you take up in the future!” Meanwhile, Jaffer highlighted Dhawan’s selflessness, stating, “A man for the big tournaments.
Never got the plaudits he deserved but knowing him, he didn’t care who got the applause as long as the team was winning.”
A Legacy of Records and Leadership
Dhawan’s career is decorated with numerous records, particularly in limited-overs cricket.
He was the first batsman to hit back-to-back centuries in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and holds the record for the most fours in the tournament.
His leadership skills were also evident as he captained both Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, a rare feat in Indian cricket.
As Dhawan steps away from the game, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also extended their best wishes, acknowledging his significant impact on Indian cricket.
“As Shikhar Dhawan retires from International and Domestic cricket, we wish him all the very best for the road ahead,” read a tweet from the BCCI.
