Undeterred by Protest Threats, BCCI Stands Firm on Kanpur Venue for India-Bangladesh Second Test

As the highly anticipated India-Bangladesh Test series approaches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that the second match, scheduled to take place at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, will proceed as planned despite early threats of protest from a right-wing organization. The series, which marks the beginning of India’s home Test season, is set to commence on September 19 in Chennai.

Protest Threats and BCCI’s Response

The build-up to the Test series has been marred by calls for disruption during the second match by the Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing outfit. The group has alleged that they will protest against the visiting Bangladeshi team in retaliation for the ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh amid the country’s political shift.

However, the BCCI remains undeterred by these threats. A senior BCCI official, speaking to SportsTak, stated, “Yes, we are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the concerned authorities. We have taken all necessary measures to ensure the match goes ahead as scheduled, and the stadium is fully prepared to host both teams.”

The official further emphasized, “The match is not going anywhere — it will be held in Kanpur. However, we will continue to keep an eye on developments, both in Kanpur and at the other venues.”

Kanpur’s Cricketing History

The Bangladesh cricket team has faced numerous challenges both on and off the field in recent times. The country’s political unrest has led to a host of changes within the cricket board, while the players had to leave early for their tour of Pakistan with assistance from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium last hosted an international contest in late 2021, during New Zealand‘s tour of India. The venue witnessed the series opener between the two sides, which famously ended in a thrilling draw. The match was marked by bad light, with New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel playing out 8.4 overs towards the end to secure a draw with a single wicket remaining. The contest also saw the Test debut of Shreyas Iyer, who celebrated the occasion with a sublime hundred.
