Sri Lankan Cricket Team is way ahead of other contesting teams in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Though India, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia finish as the top four qualifiers for the semi-finals currently, Sri Lanka is leading at the 5th position with slight chances of sealing their spot in the semi-finals. Having played a total of six matches, Sri Lanka’s winning streak stood at 2 with losing streak at 4, better than the rest of the teams due to a superior run rate.
A day to mourn for Sri Lanka Cricket
Veteran and one of the oldest fans of Sri Lanka Cricket, Percy Abeysekara passed away this Monday at the age of 87 due prolonged illness. The legendary fan celebrated his 87th birthday this year only and he had been unwell for a long time. Percy Abeysekara, also fondly known as Uncle Percy was a die-hard fan of Sri Lankan Cricket who could be always seen waving the Sri Lankan flag at the stadium to cheer the team since the 1979 World Cup.
Just recently in October, Sri Lanka Cricket gifted Rs. 5 million to Uncle Percy as a gesture of kindness to support his physical well-being and medical expenses. Not just that, when India was on a tour of Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup 2023, Team India skipper Rohit Sharma paid a visit to Uncle Percy at his home to ask about his well-being.
Former cricketers pay condolences
Uncle Percy’s death has torn apart Sri Lankan cricketers and even international cricketers as they went on to express their condolences on his demise. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya said “It is with great sadness that I heard our beloved Uncle Percy has met his maker. You were the first superfan and for all of us you will always be special RIP.
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan also took to his Twitter handle with a sorrowful tweet saying “My condolences to the family of UNCLE PERCY. Srilankan’s Cricket biggest fan is no more. If Sri Lanka lost or won, He was always happy. Indian team had lot of respect towards him.”
