Vikram Rathour Defends Virat Kohli’s Opening Role Amid T20 World Cup Struggles

Virat Kohli has faced a challenging start to the 2024 T20 World Cup, managing just 29 runs across four innings, including a golden duck. Despite his record as the leading run-getter in T20 World Cups, questions have arisen about his position as an opener for India.

Kohli had a stellar IPL 2024 season, scoring 741 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore and winning the Orange Cap as an opener. However, his form has not translated to the T20 World Cup.

India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour, addressed these concerns ahead of India‘s Super Eight match against Bangladesh. When asked if Kohli should move back to No. 3, Rathour responded with a smile, “Are you not happy that he is opening? Everybody wanted him to open I thought.” Despite Kohli’s recent struggles, Rathour indicated that the team is content with the current batting order and any changes would depend on the opposition and conditions.

Rathour acknowledged Kohli’s tough run but emphasized that it has allowed other players in the lineup to step up. “I’m not happy. I would love it if he gets going and scores more runs,” Rathour said. “But it is good when you are challenged at times. The guys who are not getting too much of batting in India sometimes, they are the ones who put up scores today and our middle-order came to play. So, it was good to see.”
