VVS Laxman, the renowned former India batsman, and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief, is set to take on coaching responsibilities for the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China. This decision comes as there is an overlap in the schedule with the 50-over World Cup, which will be hosted in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has chosen to field a B team for the Asian Games, led by Rituraj Gaikwad and coached by Laxman.
Laxman to coach in Ireland
In addition to his role at the Asian Games, Laxman will also step in as the coach for the three-match T20 series against Ireland in the following month, as Rahul Dravid, the current head coach, will be given a break after the ongoing West Indies series. The BCCI has decided to provide the support staff, including batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, with a much-needed rest ahead of the Asia Cup.
The West Indies series, consisting of two Tests, three ODIs, and a five-match T20 series, will be a demanding tour for the Indian team. With the last two T20 matches scheduled to be played in Florida, USA, the team management recognized the opportunity to field a second-string team for the Ireland series, making it an ideal time for Laxman to join as the coach.
Not the first coaching experience for Laxman
This is not the first time Laxman has assumed the role of acting head coach for the Indian team. Following the team’s semifinal exit from the T20 World Cup last year, Laxman stepped in for the New Zealand series, showcasing his expertise and leadership skills in guiding the team.
The national selection committee, headed by newly-appointed chairman Ajit Agarkar, is yet to finalize the squad for the Ireland series. Meanwhile, Agarkar himself will soon travel to the West Indies to engage in discussions with coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma about the roadmap for the upcoming 50-over World Cup.
