Washington Sundar Proclaims Himself a Top-Order Batter After Stunning Century Against Delhi in Ranji

Team India and Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar has declared himself a top-order batter after an amazing century against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. He scored 152 runs for Tamil Nadu, which made headlines in the 2024-25 season. This performance not only showed off his skills but also boosted his confidence as a top-order batsman. 

He said, "I definitely consider myself a top-order batter." This statement comes after a time when he mostly batted in the lower middle order (sometimes even as low as No. 8). Sundar feels thankful for the chance to bat higher up, stating, "It was a decision by the management and I am grateful for the opportunity." His ability to adapt to what the team needs is clear, however, he really wants to make a big impact for Tamil Nadu. Although he has faced challenges, this moment feels like a turning point in his career.

Strong Partnership with Sai Sudarshan

In this game, Sundar created a strong partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who made an impressive 213 runs. Together, they piled on 232 runs for the second wicket, following an opening stand of 168 runs between N Jagadeesan and Sudharsan. "I have been feeling really confident about my skills and how I've batted in the last few years," Sundar said, showing his eagerness to face challenges at the top of the order. 

He hit his century not long after play resumed on day two, finishing it with a perfectly timed shot through the slips. "Batting at the top of the order is a lot of fun," he continued (although) it can be tricky at times. However, he truly enjoys this position because it allows him to showcase his talent.

Embracing Versatility Across Formats

Before this match, Sundar represented India in a T20I series against Bangladesh, where India clean swept them. He felt the buzz of playing in different formats: "It is thrilling... you get to try out all formats and have a number of chances." 

His ability to adapt has been key (especially) as he shifts between different styles of play. "Test cricket is the ultimate format," he claimed, showing his commitment to excel in longer games. Sundar's love for red-ball cricket is evident because he wants to keep performing at a high level throughout the tournament. 

With his recent century and a new focus on batting at the top of the order, Washington Sundar is ready to strengthen his role in Tamil Nadu's lineup. He expressed hope that he can "deliver such knocks consistently," which shows his desire for ongoing success and contribution to his team. However, the pressure is high and only time will tell if he can keep it up.
