India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will rejoin the squad ahead of the series-ending Test match against England in Dharamsala. Bumrah was rested for the fourth Test in Ranchi to manage his workload, considering the upcoming IPL campaign followed by the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
The 30-year-old Bumrah had been in outstanding form over the first three games of the series, taking 17 wickets at an average of 13.64. He was replaced by Bengal seamer Akash Deep in India’s XI for the Ranchi Test. India also have Mohammed Siraj and Mukesh Kumar available in their squad to pick for a Test match that is expected to favour fast bowlers.
Senior batter KL Rahul has officially been ruled out of the Test after not fully recovering from a quadriceps injury that flared up after the series-opening Test in Hyderabad. Rahul was sent to London for an expert opinion. His issue stems from pain in his right quadriceps, for which he underwent surgery last year. There is still some stiffness, and the BCCI, selectors, and team management are reluctant to take any risks with him.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar has been released from the squad to play in the Ranji Trophy semifinal fixture for Tamil Nadu against Mumbai, starting on March 2. Sundar will rejoin the Test squad in Dharamsala after the completion of the domestic fixture.
India’s updated squad for the 5th Test: Rohit Sharma (c), Jasprit Bumrah (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.
