“We didn’t play our best” Harmanpreet Kaur Acknowledges Mistakes After India’s 58 Run Loss to New Zealand Women

The ninth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is here. On October 4, the India Women’s team marked their inaugural tournament match against the New Zealand Women’s team. But the first match of Team India ended in a disappointing way. They faced an early setback as they faced a 58-run defeat. After that, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur reflected on the defeat. 

Reflecting on the Defeat:

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has come up with another exciting season. Team India started as they faced New Zealand Women in their inaugural match of this edition. But the beginning become disappointing for the Indian side. While bowling in the first innings, they faced a setback. But while chasing the target, their entire batting lineup was broken. 

After restricting the New Zealand side in 160 runs, Team India faced setbacks. They lost the first wicket in 11 runs as Shefali Verma was dismissed scoring only 2 runs. Smriti Mandhana walked early scoring 12 runs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 15 runs. Richa Ghosh was dismissed on 12 runs in 19 balls. They got all out in 102 runs and faced a 58-run defeat.

As a result of this, New Zealand Women defeated India by 58 runs. After the defeat, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur talked about it and accepted the mistakes. She said, “We didn’t play our best cricket today. Going forward we have to think what areas we have to improve. Every game now is important and we have to play our best cricket. We created chances, it’s not like that we didn’t create.”

Praising the Opponents:

While batting in the first innings, the New Zealand batters dominated the Indian side. Sophie Devine played an unbeaten knock of 57 runs. Georgia Plimmer added a crucial 34 runs. On the flip side, while bowling in the first innings, Renuka Singh secured 2 wickets in 27 runs and Arundhati Reddy and Asha Sobhana secured 1 wicket each. 

Harmanpreet Kaur praised the opponent. She said, “They played better cricket than us, no doubt about that. This is such a high stage where you can’t make these mistakes. We have chased 160-170 many times.”

Later she added, “But on that pitch .. it was 10-15 runs too many. At one stage, the way they started, I was thinking it would be 180. This wasn’t the start we were expecting (in this tournament).”
