India head coach Rahul Dravid says his team is not under any pressure ahead of the World Test Championship final against Australia, which begins on June 7 at The Oval. Meanwhile, the 50-year-old remarked that for the first time, the anticipation around an ICC event is lessened because media briefings are mostly focused on the Ashes 2023.
Notably, the Indian team arrived in London in three groups and worked hard to adjust to the unfamiliar surroundings. However, unlike in previous years, the buzz in England was mostly focused on England’s one-off Test against Ireland and, to a lesser extent, the FA Cup final, and hence the Indian cricketers haven’t faced the pressure of claiming an ICC Trophy, which is long overdue for them.
Meanwhile, Dravid stated that reaching the WTC final is the product of two years of hard work and that no one can take that away even if India loses the summit battle. However, he stated that the team will give it their all to win their first ICC championship in nearly ten years.
Rahul Dravid Said
“No, not at all (whether the Indian team is under any sort of pressure). I mean, we don’t feel any pressure in terms of trying to win an ICC trophy. Of course, it would be nice to do it. It’s certainly nice to be able to win an ICC tournament. But also in the context of things, you look at this and you see this is the culmination of two years of work, it’s a culmination of a lot of success that gets you here. So there’s a lot of positives to take from that to see where you stand on the table, winning series in Australia, drawing series here, being very competitive everywhere that this team has played in the world over the last five or six years.
“Those are things that will never change just because you have or you don’t have an ICC trophy. That’s really the bigger picture. But, of course, it’s nice to be able to lift any game of cricket you want to win. This happens to be like a World Test Championship final and it would be nice to get them on the right side of the result,” Dravid was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
