South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder sustained a fractured right middle finger during the ongoing Test against Sri Lanka in Durban.
The injury occurred when Lahiru Kumara bowled a 140 km/h delivery, striking Mulder’s hand during South Africa’s first innings on Day 2. Despite considerable pain, Mulder bravely resumed batting but managed to face only two more deliveries before walking off the field.
In the same session, Mulder returned to the crease with South Africa at 145 for nine. Showing resilience, he contributed 26 runs for the last wicket alongside Kagiso Rabada. His fighting spirit was evident when he smashed Dhananjaya de Silva for a six down the ground. However, X-rays taken during the lunch break confirmed the severity of the injury, ruling him out of action for the rest of the series.
Matthew Breetzke Named Replacement for Second Test
Following Mulder’s injury, Cricket South Africa has announced Matthew Breetzke as his replacement for the second Test. The 24-year-old batter made his Test debut last month in Mirpur against Bangladesh and brings fresh energy to the squad.
The second Test, scheduled to begin on December 5 in Gqeberha, will provide Breetzke an opportunity to prove his mettle at the international level. South Africa will look to regroup and strengthen their lineup as they aim for a series victory against Sri Lanka.
