Will Jacks Highlights the Need for Time as England’s Revamped ODI Squad Adapts

After tough losses at Trent Bridge and Headingley, England claimed a 46-run victory in the third ODI at Riverside, using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method due to rain interruptions. Will Jacks emphasized that England’s revamped one-day squad requires time to adapt to the format, acknowledging the challenges of adjusting to new roles and strategies. Despite the earlier setbacks, this win showed the team’s potential and resilience, but Jacks believes patience is essential for the side to fully settle into their rhythm in upcoming matches.

Will Jacks on England’s New-Look One-Day Side:

Will Jacks acknowledged that England’s revamped one-day team needs time to adapt to a format they rarely play, following their crucial victory over Australia to stay in the five-match series. Jacks contributed an impressive 84, partnering with centurion Harry Brook to guide England to a rain-affected win in Durham on Tuesday. This triumph came after Australia claimed wins in the first two games, keeping the series alive for the hosts.

With key players like Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Joe Root, and Jonny Bairstow absent, England is leaning on a younger generation for the current series. However, both Harry Brook and Will Jacks have limited experience in 50-over cricket. Neither has played in the One-Day Cup since 2019, as top white-ball cricketers often miss the tournament due to the rise of The Hundred, further crowding their schedule.

He said, “ With the lack of 50-over cricket that we play now, finding that tempo can be difficult. Of course it is difficult. The schedule only allows what it allows and that’s for people above us (to determine). We just go where we’re told. I think when you’re leading up to a major event, you are going to play more but with the way TV is… no, that’s out of our control. This is our first time together as a squad so it’s going to take time to get there but we’re progressing every game and hopefully when we come back next time we’ll be one step further.”
