Gujarat Giants skipper Beth Mooney addressed a press conference on the afternoon of the WPL opener. The Giants will take on Mumbai in the inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League.
Addressing the press conference, Mooney seemed confident of her team’s winning chances against the Mumbai Indians. “I am not sure there is much more pressure. I think I should not be playing if I didn’t put pressure on myself to perform. First and foremost we have got a job to do and that’s to entertain.”, said the Giants captain when asked about the pressure of facing Mumbai at the opener.
The Giants have entered the tournament as the underdogs. The absence of a prominent leader at the top is something that could disturb the Giant’s campaign but the team looks confident despite that. They do have some big names in the form of Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney, Harleen Deol, Sneh Rana, etc.
The Indians, on the other hand, look much stronger on paper. They’ve got some really hard hitters in their middle order, which could put pressure on the somewhat inexperienced bowling lineup of the Giants. However, Mooney thinks that her team is fully prepared for the tournament and is ready to take the Mumbai Indians head-on.
Speaking on her role as the captain of the team, Mooney said, “Understanding the personalities and how to work with them will be essential, and I think the team that can do that the best and get the best out of each other, will go a long way in terms of being successful.”
Mooney was a part of the 15-member Australian team that won the T20 World Cup just a couple of weeks ago. She was one of the top performers for her team, and thus the franchise would also expect the Aussie wicket-keeper to replicate the same performances at the WPL.
