Yograj Singh, former Indian cricketer and father of legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, has once again made headlines with his explosive comments. This time, he directed his anger towards two of India’s most celebrated cricket captains, Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, blaming them for significant setbacks in his and his son’s careers.
In a recent interview with Zee Switch, Yograj Singh did not hold back his resentment towards Kapil Dev, the captain under whom he made his ODI debut in the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup against New Zealand in December 1980. Despite the promising start to his career, Yograj’s time in international cricket was cut short. He played only six ODIs, taking four wickets at an average of 46.50, before being dropped from the squad. Yograj has repeatedly blamed Kapil Dev for his brief international career, accusing him of not providing enough opportunities to grow as a player.
Yograj’s criticism of Kapil Dev took a sharp turn as he referenced the achievements of his son, Yuvraj Singh, in comparison to Kapil Dev’s career. “The greatest captain of our time, Kapil Dev… I told him, I’ll leave you in a position where the world would spit on you. Today, Yuvraj Singh has 13 trophies, and you have only one, the World Cup [1983]. End of discussion,” Yograj Singh declared, emphasizing Yuvraj’s accomplishments in domestic and international cricket, including his pivotal role in India’s 2011 World Cup victory.
Yograj Singh’s grievances extended beyond Kapil Dev as he also targeted MS Dhoni, another iconic figure in Indian cricket. According to Yograj, Dhoni was responsible for cutting short Yuvraj Singh’s career, which, in his opinion, could have lasted four to five more years. “He [Dhoni] should look at his face in the mirror. He is a very big cricketer, but what he has done against my son, everything is coming out now; it can never be forgiven in life,” Yograj Singh stated with evident frustration.
Yuvraj Singh’s cricketing journey has been one of the most inspirational stories in the sport, particularly his battle against cancer and his comeback to help India win the 2011 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament. Yograj Singh believes that his son’s contribution to Indian cricket should be recognized at the highest level, and has even called for Yuvraj to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, for his extraordinary courage and achievements.
