Team India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is set to join Northamptonshire as they look to bolster their bowling attack for the remaining fixtures in the Royal London One-Day Cup and County Championship. Chahal, who will be available for the final One-Day Cup match against Kent on Wednesday, is also expected to participate in the five remaining County Championship fixtures for the team.
Chahal, 34, brings a wealth of experience and skill to Northamptonshire, having previously spent time with Kent during the 2023 season. In his stint there, he took nine wickets across two County Championship games, showcasing his capability in the longer format of the game.
John Sadler, head coach of Northamptonshire, expressed enthusiasm about Chahal’s arrival, stating, “Yuzvendra is another high-profile overseas player who brings with him a wealth of experience and some incredible skills. His record speaks for itself, and his wicket-taking ability will add strength to our attack.” Chahal’s addition is expected to provide both variety and depth to the squad as they aim to improve their standing in the competition.
Currently, Northamptonshire sits just above the bottom of the nine-team One-Day Cup Group A table, having managed to secure only one victory from their seven matches thus far. Chahal’s expertise will be crucial in their efforts to turn their fortunes around in the tournament.
Earlier this year, Chahal made history in the Indian Premier League by becoming the first bowler to reach 200 wickets. Although he was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2024, he did not feature in any matches. His move to Northamptonshire will allow him to stay match-fit and continue sharpening his skills in the red-ball format as selectors keep him on the list of back-up options, particularly for T20 cricket.
Chahal’s involvement with Northamptonshire promises to be an exciting development for both the player and the club as they aim for better results in the ongoing competitions.
