Legendary Pakistan cricketer Zaheer Abbas has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing Babar Azam and India‘s Virat Kohli, labeling such discussions as pointless. Abbas emphasized that Kohli’s consistency and ability to score runs in nearly every match make him a standout player compared to Babar.
Babar Azam has faced scrutiny recently due to his lackluster performances on the international stage, particularly during the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024, as well as in the home Test series against Bangladesh. His struggles have intensified the comparisons with Kohli, who remains a formidable force in world cricket.

Abbas on Comparisons between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam
In comments made to PTI at the Cricket Predicta Conclave in Sharjah, Abbas stated, “Yeh fizool ki baatein hai (these comparisons are pointless). Virat Kohli scores in every match while the other player (Babar) doesn’t score consistently, so how can you compare? The player who consistently scores runs is the bigger player.”
Abbas also praised the current Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, for its balance and form. He noted that the team is performing thoughtfully and is well-equipped for the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. “The Indian team overall is very good. Their batters and bowlers are performing well, making it a balanced side,” he remarked.
He added that Rohit Sharma’s captaincy has significantly contributed to the team’s success, stating, “There is a very good chance of them doing well at the Champions Trophy because they have a balanced team.”
Reflecting on Pakistan’s recent performances, Abbas expressed disappointment over the team’s defeat to Bangladesh in a home Test series, calling it a significant setback. “It was a huge blow that Pakistan lost to Bangladesh. We never thought that not only would Pakistan lose, but it would lose so badly,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Abbas remains hopeful for the future of Pakistan cricket, citing the team’s hard work as a potential avenue for improvement. He acknowledged the cyclical nature of cricketing fortunes, referencing how the West Indies once dominated the sport but are no longer at the top.
