BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Addresses Delays in ICC World Cup Schedule and Ticket Sales

The cricketing world is abuzz with excitement as the ICC World Cup approaches, even though the tournament is just under a month away from its much-anticipated kickoff. However, the road to this quadrennial mega event has been less than smooth for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The delay in announcing the tournament schedule and the subsequent sale of tickets has stirred some concerns among cricket enthusiasts..

Unprecedented Schedule Adjustments

The eagerly awaited World Cup schedule, traditionally unveiled a year prior to the event, was finally revealed on Tuesday, 27 June. Yet, this initial schedule turned out to be far from final, with several matches, including the high-stakes India vs Pakistan showdown, undergoing rescheduling.

BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, has stepped forward to defend the board’s stance on these delays, citing a crucial reason. He explains, “The delay has been primarily caused by the need to ensure that the tournament schedule aligns with various logistical and participating members’ operational challenges and broadcast requirements. As a result, the BCCI has been working diligently to finalize all aspects of the tournament, including venue availability, team schedules, and other essential arrangements.”

Ticket Sale Woes

Adding to the unease of fans, the sale of match tickets was also held up due to the late announcement of the schedule and subsequent changes. Cricket enthusiasts were left waiting in anticipation. In response to this situation, the BCCI has devised a plan to cater to the immense demand for tickets in this cricket-crazy nation. After discussions with state associations, the board has decided to release an additional 4,00,000 tickets.

The “general sale of tickets” for all tournament matches went live from 8 p.m. on Friday, 8 September. Fans looking to secure seats for the semi-finals and final will have their chance from Friday, 15 September.

Challenges of Hosting in India

Jay Shah, who also heads the Asian Cricket Council, acknowledges that hosting a tournament of this magnitude in a vast and diverse country like India comes with its unique set of challenges and opportunities.

He says, “Organizing a 50-over Cricket World Cup in a country as vast and diversified as India presents both exciting opportunities and unique challenges. The scale and diversity of India require meticulous planning, coordination, and execution to ensure the tournament’s success and a seamless experience for players, fans, and stakeholders.”
