Abhishek Sharma Reflects on Rising Popularity

Punjab all-rounder Abhishek Sharma has enjoyed a stellar year in cricket, highlighted by his impressive performance in the IPL 2024 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. His efforts in the tournament earned him a call-up to the Indian national team for the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Despite a rocky start with a duck on debut, Abhishek bounced back with a magnificent century in his second match.

In a candid interview, Abhishek discussed the attention he has received from fans, noting it wasn’t limited to just female admirers. “It’s not just female attention, I’ve also received a lot of attention from males. It felt really good. These moments are those which give motivation to any cricketer or celebrity. I also got such attention from them and received good luck and congratulatory messages,” he shared during a conversation on the YouTube channel ‘Second Innings with Manjot Kalra’.

During the IPL season, Abhishek accumulated 484 runs across 14 games with an impressive strike rate of 204.22, playing a pivotal role in guiding Sunrisers Hyderabad to the finals. He praised team captain Pat Cummins for creating a positive and supportive team environment. “He had come after winning the World Cup for Australia. The aura of Pat Cummins was very evident within the team. He would talk to everyone, asking the new players about their families and such things. He gave everyone complete freedom,” Abhishek explained.

Abhishek also formed a formidable opening partnership with Travis Head, showcasing their ability to tackle top bowlers with ease. “My plan was clear, I would play my bowlers freely. I knew that Travis Head also plays with a similar approach as I had followed him for a long time. But I did not know that if I was hitting, he would also hit. We adapted very quickly and there was never a moment where we thought that a particular bowling was troubling us,” he said.
