Arundhati Reddy Reprimanded for ICC Code of Conduct Breach
India pace bowler Arundhati Reddy has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match against Pakistan in Dubai.
The incident occurred during the 20th over of Pakistan’s innings on Sunday, when Reddy, after dismissing all-rounder Nida Dar, made a gesture towards the pavilion.
The act was deemed to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to actions or gestures that may provoke an aggressive reaction from the opposing player.
Reddy admitted her mistake and accepted the proposed sanction from match referee Shandre Fritz, a member of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
The decision resulted in an official reprimand and the addition of one demerit point to Reddy’s disciplinary record. Since it was her first offence within a 24-month period, no formal hearing was required.
What is Article 2.5?
Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct refers to the use of language, actions, or gestures by players that could provoke an aggressive reaction from an opponent upon their dismissal.
Such behaviour is taken seriously to maintain the spirit of the game and ensure fair play.
Penalties for such breaches include official reprimands, a deduction of up to 50% of a player’s match fee, and the addition of demerit points.
In Reddy’s case, one demerit point was added to her record. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, these convert into suspension points, leading to potential bans from matches.
Consequences of Demerit Points
Demerit points are tracked for 24 months, and accumulating four or more points leads to suspension points, which result in match bans.
Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test match or two ODIs or T20Is. The ICC closely monitors these infractions to ensure players uphold the game’s integrity.
While Reddy’s actions were deemed minor, they serve as a reminder of the consequences players face for on-field misconduct.
