Bangladesh is eagerly awaiting updates on Tamim Iqbal‘s condition ahead of the solitary Test against Afghanistan after his recurring back problem resurfaced. Tamim’s lower back pain resurged following his training session at SBNS on June 7, leading to his precautionary rest.
Tamim refrained from training alongside his teammates and instead engaged in physical exercises under the guidance of Julian Calefato, the head of BCB’s rehabilitation center. While the rest of the team was involved in warm-ups, Tamim was observed practicing catching under the supervision of trainer Nick Lee. During this session, his discomfort became quite evident as he opted not to attempt challenging catches.
When Tamim commenced his batting session against the throw-down specialist, it was apparent that he wasn’t performing at his optimal level, which persisted when facing both pace and spin bowlers.
Tamim encountered difficulties while facing Taskin Ahmed and Khaled Ahmed, to the extent that he had to hold his back at one point. While he faced no issues while driving on the front foot, he struggled with back foot shots, a challenge that persisted when facing the spinners.
BCB Selection Panel Member Said
“Yes, he is having some back pain and that is a concern,” Habibul Bashar, BCB selection panel member, told Cricbuzz on Monday. “If there was a fracture or tear in that case you could say that he is out for two to four weeks but that is not the case with him and in the past we have seen that this pain had gone away. So we will have to wait and see and hope for the best.”
According to reports, Tamim, who had some stiffness during batting on Monday, is eager to see how he handles Tuesday’s (June 12) training at SBNS. If the discomfort persists, he may let the club management know about his urgent course of action. Habibul emphasised that the 15-person roster has backup opener Mahmudul Hasan in case Tamim ultimately does not make the cut.
