Former India player Gautam Gambhir emerged as a leading candidate for the head coach position after reportedly undergoing an interview with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday. Gambhir’s credentials were bolstered by his successful coaching stint, guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Alongside Gambhir, the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) also interviewed former cricketer WV Raman for the prestigious coaching role, marking a pivotal step in their selection process.

Rahul Dravid, the current head coach of Team India under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, is set to conclude his tenure after the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid has announced his decision not to seek a renewal of his contract beyond June. This marks his final assignment coaching the Indian team, as he will step down following the conclusion of the prestigious tournament later this year.
Gautam Gambhir, widely considered the frontrunner for India’s next head coach, was anticipated to be the sole contender for the prestigious position. His candidacy for the high-profile role appeared unchallenged, with expectations that he would secure the appointment uncontested.

According to sources, Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman emerged as the primary candidates discussed by the top brass of the BCCI for the head coach vacancy. While Raman’s presentation was noted to be particularly impressive, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) plans to meet with an overseas head coach on Wednesday. Gambhir participated in the discussions via virtual means from his home, marking an active engagement in the selection process.
A BCCI official said, “Gambhir had a virtual interview but Raman’s presentation was very impressive and detailed. The CAC is likely to interview an overseas candidate tomorrow. Gambhir has the edge but Raman’s presentation was very thorough.”
That source further said, Yes, the head coach has a big say in these appointments because he would want people he is comfortable working with. Having said that, it’s not that straightforward and BCCI too can propose their own candidates or people they think are ideal for the job. Ultimately it will be Gautam Gambhir, who is likely to become the coach, who would decide his team.”
