Bhanuka Rajapaksa Returns to Sri Lanka’s T20I Squad for West Indies Series

Bhanuka Rajapaksa has been recalled to Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies, marking an exciting return for the hard-hitting batter. The 32-year-old player, who last represented Sri Lanka in T20Is in January 2023, has shown impressive form recently with his performances in various leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). His inclusion is part of a broader effort by the team to strengthen their lineup following a disappointing home series against India.

Recent Performances and Form

Rajapaksa recently played six matches for the St Lucia Kings in the CPL 2024, where he made significant contributions to his team’s success. His standout performance included a remarkable innings of 68 runs off just 34 balls in a successful chase against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

Prior to his CPL stint, he was instrumental in Galle Marvels’ journey to the final of the Lanka Premier League, finishing with 236 runs at an impressive strike rate of 163.88. His ability to score quickly and effectively makes him a valuable asset for Sri Lanka as they prepare for their T20I matches against the West Indies.

Squad Changes and Strategy

Alongside Rajapaksa, leg spinner Jeffrey Vandersay has also been included in the squad. Vandersay’s last T20I appearance was in February 2022, but he impressed during recent ODIs against India, taking six wickets across two matches. The return of these players signifies a strategic shift as Sri Lanka aims to revitalize their team dynamics after a 0-3 defeat to India.

Former captain Dasun Shanaka has been left out of this series, along with other notable players like Dilshan Madushanka and Dushmantha Chameera. This decision reflects the selectors’ desire to experiment with new talent and enhance team performance.

The three-match T20I series against the West Indies is scheduled to take place on October 13, 15, and 17 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. These matches will be crucial for Sri Lanka as they look to regain momentum and build confidence ahead of future competitions.
