Dambulla Cricket Franchise under New Management, Set to Rebrand as Dambulla Sixers

The cricket world is down in cricket fever. The T20 World Cup is going on and making people crazy. In this situation. A significant change happened in the Sri Lanka Premier League. The tournament set to witness their next edition on July 1. But before the season starts, the Dambulla franchise in the Lanka Premier League now has new ownership, taken over by Sequoia Consultants, an engineering consulting firm based in Los Angeles.

Fresh Start for Dambulla Franchise:

The Dambulla franchise in the Lanka Premier League has undergone a significant transformation with its acquisition by an American civil engineering firm. Sequoia Consultants Inc. of  USA has assumed ownership of the team. Priyanga de Silva, a chartered civil engineer with a passion for cricket, holds the majority stake in Sequoia, heralding a new era for the franchise.

Two weeks after Sri Lanka Cricket terminated the ownership of the Dambulla franchise, a new development emerged. The board’s decision came after co-owner Tamim Rahman was arrested by Sri Lankan authorities under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act. Subsequently, the ownership was transferred to Sequoia Consultants Inc., marking a swift change and signaling a fresh start for the team in the tournament.

After that, De Silva said, “My desire to get engaged in cricket, especially cricket in Sri Lanka, prompted me to purchase the Dambulla Sixers team, I have seen LPL grow as a league during the last four years, which is commendable for a small country like ours. I am excited to be a part of this growth and be able to contribute to the development of cricket in our country.”

LPL Organizers on This Change:

Under the fresh ownership, the franchise will be known as the ‘Dambulla Sixers’. This acquisition has garnered a positive reception from LPL organizers, who see De Silva’s cricketing background as advantageous. Notably, the new owner brings substantial cricketing experience, having previously competed as a first-class cricketer in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket scene. 

The Tournament Director of the LPL Mr. Samantha Dodanwela said, “We are extremely happy to have the new owner taking over Dambulla, and Mr. De Silva’s background as a former first-class cricketer definitely adds value to this ownership, as he understands the cricketing pulse of our nation.”
