BCCI not to allow wives or families anymore with players on tours

The BCCI reportedly took the strict decision of barring wives and family from accompanying players on the tours. Following India’s poor show Down Under, the BCCI took the call after the review meeting on Saturday. The meeting focused on India’s poor performance in Test and involved BCCI officials, Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar, and Rohit Sharma.

Strict rules imposed post review meeting

After a whitewash at home against New Zealand, India suffered a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Apart from the series result, individual performances of players along with the Indian dressing room situation sparked controversies. According to a Dainik Jagran report, post the review meeting on Saturday, the board decided to reintroduce an old rule. As per an official, the wives and family members of players will not be staying with the players during tours. This rule was scarred during Covid-19. The official said that the board officials believe that it affects the player performance.

During the BGT 2024 in Australia, family members of many players stayed with them for the entire tour. According to the new rule, reportedly, for a tournament lasting more than 45 days, wives and families can stay with the players for 14 days. For shorter tours, the stay will be limited to just seven days.

Gambhir’s manager in focus

Another rule suggests that no player will be allowed to travel separately. The board observed that some players have often travelled separately instead of going with the team. BCCI also set a strict rule saying that no player will be allowed to travel separately. “Keeping in view the team unity, now all the players will travel by the team bus only. No matter how big a player is, he will not be allowed to travel separately,” read the report.

Gautam Gambhir’s manager Gaurav Arora has been traveling with the Indian team on tours. This has never happened before. So the BCCI took strong action against this as well. Arora would not be allowed to stay in the same hotel as the team anymore or to sit in the VIP box in stadiums. He has no direct connection with the team and therefore he will also be barred from availing the team bus.
