“For me, fielding is non negotiable”: David Warner

In the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Australian cricket star David Warner has been setting the field on fire with his exceptional fielding skills, proving that age is just a number when combined with prime fitness and a winning attitude.

Despite occasional lackluster fielding efforts from the Australian side, Warner, at the age of 36, has showcased his athletic prowess throughout the tournament. He recently made a spectacular catch in the outfield to dismiss Kusal Mendis, underlining his reputation as one of the finest fielders in world cricket. In his impressive career spanning 361 games across formats, Warner has taken a staggering 208 catches.

Warner attributes his exceptional fielding to his unwavering commitment to fitness and his attitude. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and giving it your all on the field.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Warner stated, “I pride myself on my fitness, so now I keep taking the mickey out of a lot of the guys here. I’m almost 37, running around like a little bulldog in the outfield. It comes down to attitude. And that’s what fielding is; it’s all about attitude. Get 10 pieces of laundry, dive around, throw yourself around, and try and take those match-winning catches that can turn the game.”

For Warner, fielding is a non-negotiable aspect of the game. He believes in wholeheartedly committing to every catch or boundary-saving effort, even if it occasionally results in conceding runs.

He stated, “You see people half commit. I’d rather commit and [have] it go for four when I’m trying to take a catch or save a boundary. For me, it’s a non-negotiable.”

While Warner has faced challenges with the bat in the World Cup, with just 65 runs in three innings, his fielding prowess has remained unscathed. He leads the tournament with five catches in three games.

Australia secured their first victory in the World Cup against Sri Lanka following two disappointing defeats to India and South Africa. David Warner also expressed his support for teammate Mitchell Starc, who showed sportsmanship by warning Kusal Perera for leaving the crease at the non-striker’s end, despite which Perera repeated the offense.
