Former Selector Mohammad Wasim Labels Babar Azam ‘Stubborn’ for Resisting Squad Changes

For the past few years, Pakistan cricket has been suffering from some critical issues. After making a group stage exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup. The team also struggled in the bilateral series. After those consecutive failures, the team has gone through a lot of changes. In this situation, Former Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim stated that Babar Azam often resisted making changes to the team lineup.

Mohammad Wasim on Babar Azam:

In recent times, the Pakistan team has faced consecutive failures. After making exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup 2024, the team has gone through many changes. Their struggle continued even in the bilateral series. Babar Azam took the helm of Pakistan’s captaincy, in 2020. Even under his leadership, Pakistan faced those flaws. After stepping down from the captaincy after the ODI World Cup, but resumed again after the T20 World Cup. 

Former Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim claimed that Babar Azam often resisted changes to the team. Wasim had to frequently step in and persuade Babar to accept necessary adjustments. He said, “It was painful to make him understand the advantages of changes. He was very stubborn, and I overstepped my limitations to get him on board with certain calls. He was not ready to accept changes.”

Later he added, “I will not take names, but four coaches said that a group of players is cancer to the team. If they are part of the squad, Pakistan can’t win. I tried to remove them from the team, but the team management recalled them.”

Wasim on Imad Wasim’s Injury:

Imad Wasim had initially announced his retirement but withdrew it before the T20 World Cup 2024. Mohammad Wasim revealed that Imad played with a knee injury, hiding his problems. The former chief selector explained that he left Imad out of the team to give him time to improve his fitness.

He said, “Imad has a knee injury, but he has been hiding it for years. We always speak about Azam Khan’s fitness levels, but Imad is also suffering from the same problem.
