As the highly anticipated ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has expressed strong confidence in her team’s ability to overcome Australia, the reigning champions. India has faced heartbreak at the hands of Australia in the past two editions—losing the final in 2020 and the semi-final in 2023. However, Kaur believes that her side is better equipped this time to tackle the formidable Australian team and make a deep run in the tournament.
India’s World Cup Journey So Far
India’s Women’s T20 World Cup journey has been filled with mixed emotions. In 2020, they reached the final for the first time but fell short of clinching the title after an 85-run defeat to Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Three years later, the two teams met again in the semi-final, where Australia once again dashed India’s hopes. This time around, Kaur and her team are more determined than ever to break Australia’s dominance.
Speaking ahead of the tournament during a pre-departure press conference in Mumbai, Kaur sounded optimistic and ready for the challenge. She acknowledged Australia’s strength but also stressed India’s ability to rise to the occasion.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Optimism
“Look, their team is good—no doubt about that. They also know that India is one of the teams that can go really hard on them. I think that is a really positive sign,” Kaur said. “We know that whenever we are playing against them, we can beat them any day, any time.”
Kaur added that Australia is aware of India’s potential threat. “Winning the title for so many years, it’s a great opportunity for us. They know that we are a team that is really good. We just want to play good cricket and be in that frame where we are aware and keep talking about those things that will help us beat them,” she explained.

India’s Best Squad Yet?
Harmanpreet further pointed out that India’s current squad is the strongest to have participated in the World Cup. With a blend of experienced campaigners and fresh talent, she believes this lineup has the right balance to compete at the highest level.
“If I talk about this team, we have a few players who have been playing for a longer time and know their roles really well. I’m quite confident with this team, and I can say that, yes, it’s the best team going into the World Cup,” Kaur noted.
The Indian team boasts a mix of veterans like Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, as well as up-and-coming stars such as Richa Ghosh. The combination of youth and experience is expected to help India in critical moments during the tournament.
The Australian Challenge
Australia has been a dominant force in women’s cricket, winning five out of the last seven Women’s T20 World Cup tournaments, including the last three in a row. Their consistency, depth in squad, and ability to perform under pressure have made them a formidable opponent for any team. Led by Meg Lanning, Australia has a well-balanced side with star performers like Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, and Beth Mooney.
India, however, will take confidence from their recent performances against Australia, especially in bilateral series, where they’ve shown the ability to challenge the world champions on several occasions. Kaur’s leadership and ability to perform in high-pressure games will be crucial to India’s chances.
Tournament Details
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will kick off on October 3 in the UAE, with India set to begin their campaign shortly after. The tournament features the top 10 teams from around the world competing for the prestigious title. As the competition unfolds, all eyes will be on India’s performance, especially when they eventually clash with Australia.
Kaur and her squad are ready to step up and seize their moment on the global stage, aiming to rewrite the narrative that has seen them fall just short in previous editions. A victory over Australia in this edition of the World Cup would not only be a morale booster but could also propel them toward their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup title.
