“He needs to do something about his defense if he wants to be the prolific run-getter in the team at the Test level” Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar on Shubhman Gill’s defensive technique

India’s new number three batter in Tests Shubhman Gill is going through a rough patch since he recovered from Dengue last year. The right-hander did not perform as per expectations in the 2023 fifty-over World Cup as he failed to convert the starts he got during the multi-nation tournament held in India.

Expert’s Corner

The story is no different in Test matches a format in which he demanded to bat at number three a position which Pujara occupied for a decade. Sanjay Manjrekar former Indian has expressed his concerns over Gill’s performance in Test matches

Talking to ESPNcricinfo Manjrekar said “Shubman Gill, how does he react to his failures? He needs to do something about his defense if he wants to be the prolific run-getter in the team at the Test level, both against swing and spin.

That’s a cause for worry and that’s something that won’t be solved easily. These are uncontrollable for the team management, and the selectors.”

The Performance

In 24 innings before he first played at number three, Gill had managed to score two fifties and two centuries. This phase started after India returned from Australia in 2021 and faced England in the first of the four Tests at Chennai.

Although Gill had a decent start to his Test career with a match-winning score of 90 while opening his innings at the Gabba the right-hander hasn’t yet cemented his place as a batter in the Test match arena and the record retreats that
