Why is Rohit Sharma not playing today

Team India captain Rohit Sharma has decided to rest himself owing to a poor run in Australia. The right-handed batter has scored just 31 runs in 3 Tests at a dismal average of 6.20. Before that, Rohit only managed to score just 91 runs against New Zealand at home.

Thus, Rohit Sharma conveyed his decision to the Indian management and chose to opt out of the SCG Test. India’s stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah addressed Rohit Sharma’s absence from the team. He said, “Our skipper has opted to rest. It shows the unity we have. We have two changes. Rohit has opted out and Prasidh comes in for the injured Akashdeep.”

Who Has Replaced Rohit Sharma for the Sydney Test?

Rohit’s absence from the squad has paved the way for Shubman Gill to come back into the team. Gill has earlier played 2 Tests on this tour in which he registered scores of 31, 28 and 1 across 3 innings. However, Gill’s calibre is more than that. He was one of India’s highest run-getters when the team last toured Australia

Shubman Gill was dropped from the squad for the Fourth Test against Australia to make way for another bowling option in the form of Washington Sundar. However, Gill comes back in a must-win game for the Indian team. India are currently trailing by 1-2 in the series. If they manage to pull a comeback in Sydney, they will still have a chance to qualify for the World Test Championship Final. However, a draw or loss would put them out of contention.
