Why is Rohit Sharma Not Playing Today Against Australia?

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma will not lead his team in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit stayed back in India to welcome his second child with wife Ritika Sajdeh. The couple welcomed a baby boy on November 15, just a week before the Test series begins.

Rohit communicated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and national selectors about his situation. He informed them that he might miss the Perth Test due to family commitments. However, he kept open the option of traveling last minute, depending on when his child was born. With the arrival of their son, it became clear that he would not make it to Perth in time for the first match.

Rohit expressed his intention to join the Indian squad ahead of the second Test, a day-night match starting on December 6 in Adelaide. He plans to fly out to Australia soon and will arrive in Perth on November 24, which is the third day of the first Test.

Shubman Gill Also Missing Out

Along with Rohit Sharma, India’s Prince of Cricket, Shubman Gill will also be missing this Test Match. Gill injured his finger during a practice session. It was earlier speculated that it was a fracture. However, later scans revealed that it was a tissue injury. Nonetheless, it sidelined him from the First Test against Australia.

In place of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, the team has included Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel in the Playing XI. Padikkal has played just one Test Match for the Indian Team. He has batted only one innings before and scored 65 runs. On the other hand, Jurel has played 4 Test Matches. He has scored 190 runs at an average of 63.33.

The Indian team has also handed debuts to all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and pacer Harshit Rana. The duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin had to sit out this one. Washington Sundar is the lone spinner in the squad.
