The International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed a ‘below average’ rating to the pitch used for the first Test between India and West Indies, which took place from July 12th to 14th at Windsor Park in Roseau, Caribbean. The match was officiated by former New Zealand captain Jeff Crowe as the match referee. The pitch in question posed significant challenges for both teams, making it a contentious subject in the cricketing world.
India’s Dominance in the First Test against West Indies
The opening Test match saw India bowl out West Indies for a mere 150 runs, with Indian spinners R Ashwin (5-60) and Ravindra Jadeja (3-26) combining for nine wickets. In response, India posted a formidable 421 for 5 before declaring their innings. West Indies struggled once again in the second innings, managing just 130 runs in 50.3 overs.
Ashwin, who had a remarkable match performance, secured 12 wickets in total, with seven for 71 in the second innings. The Test concluded within three days, showcasing the challenging nature of the pitch.
Demerit Point for Windsor Park Venue
In light of the ‘below average’ rating, the venue at Windsor Park in Roseau will receive one demerit point. This evaluation means that the pitch did not meet the expected standards set by the ICC, raising concerns about its suitability for Test cricket. Cricket West Indies will have the option to appeal against this verdict, and local venue authorities will need to provide an explanation to the ICC regarding why the pitch fell below the standard.
Additionally, the pitch for the second Test, held at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, also received an ‘average’ rating from the ICC. While this rating is a step above ‘below average,’ it still underscores the challenges that both teams faced in the series.
