IPL 2020: Ashwin Refrains from Mankading Finch

Ravichandran Ashwin could be part of another mankading in the history of IPL. But he chose to warn the batsman otherwise in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Ashwin’s Mankading

In the 19th IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals at Dubai, UAE, Ravichandran Ashwin got a chance of mankading Aaron Finch. He did not attempt the same but warned the opening batsman of Royal Challengers Bangalore about the same. It all happened in the fourth ball of the third over. Ashwin withdrew from his bowling action while Devdutt Padikkal was on crease. The non-striker batter Aaron Finch was a way of his crease. Ashwin was seen warning him of the same instead of going for mankading.

Flashback to IPL 2019- Ravichandran Ashwin became part of the history of the Indian Premier League after mankading Jos Buttler. Ashwin was leading the Kings XI Punjab franchise back then and Buttler was representing Rajasthan Royals. A section of people raised questions citing the spirit of the fame. Another group decided to back Ashwin citing the rulebook. Ravichandran Ashwin also defended his act of mankading referring to the rules.

Ponting effect

Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of the IPL 2020 auction was traded to Delhi Capitals. The head coach of the Capitals Rocky Pointing spoke about the incident and shared contradictory understanding about the dismissal. Ponting also mentioned discussing the same with Ashwin. Later the coach said, “I think we’re both on the same page. He feels he did everything in the rules and laws of the game and he’s absolutely right.” Ponting added, “He’s saying, ‘What if it’s the last ball of the IPL, what if I’m bowling and the batting teams needs two runs to win and the non-striker is charging halfway down the wicket? What do you expect me to do’? There’s an argument there as well, but as I said to him, I would expect that he would hold on to the ball and not Mankad and tell the batsman to stay in his crease next time and see if he’s good enough to try and close the game out for us.”

Although Ashwin was convinced with his earlier call during IPL 2019, seems to have some effect of Ponting on him regarding mankading.
