The group stage of the IPL 2024 has been ended. On the last doubleheader day, cricket enthusiasts were ready to see two high-voltage clashes. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings locked horns at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. In the second match, Rajasthan Royals were scheduled to play against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Barsapara Stadium. The second match got cancelled but the first match ended on an exciting note. Those matches impacted the points table.
Punjab’s Batting Excellence and Hyderabad’s Bowling Effort:
In the 69th match of IPL 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad faced Punjab Kings at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The game turned out to be another high-scoring affair. Batting first, Punjab Kings received an excellent start from Atharva Taide and Prabhsimran Singh. Taide scored 46 runs before being dismissed, while Prabhsimran Singh played a brilliant innings of 71 runs off 45 balls. Rilee Rossouw narrowly missed his half-century, falling at 49 runs. Skipper Jitesh Sharma remained unbeaten with 32 runs, leading PBKS to a formidable total of 214/5 in 20 overs.
The bowlers from both teams displayed commendable efforts. Hyderabad’s bowlers, in particular, worked hard to contain the score. T Natarajan took 2 wickets for 33 runs, while Pat Cummins and Vijaykanth Viyaskanth each claimed 1 wicket. Despite their efforts, the bowlers couldn’t prevent PBKS from posting a high total in the first match of the final doubleheader of IPL 2024.
Hyderabad’s Domination and Punjab’s Try:
While chasing a target of 215, Sunrisers Hyderabad demonstrated remarkable resilience. Despite losing Travis Head early, they made a strong comeback. Abhishek Sharma played a spectacular innings, scoring 66 runs off 28 balls. Rahul Tripathi added 33 runs from 18 balls, while Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed 37 runs off 25 balls. Heinrich Klaasen provided a crucial boost with 42 runs from 26 balls. Hyderabad successfully chased down the target in 19.1 overs, winning their last group stage match by 4 wickets.
Defending 214, Punjab Kings’ bowlers put in a valiant effort. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Travis Head on the first ball of the innings, giving an excellent start. Harshal Patel took the key wicket of Rahul Tripathi, and Shashank Singh dismissed the dangerous Abhishek Sharma. Arshdeep finished with 2 wickets for 37 runs, and Harshal Patel took 2 wickets for 49 runs. Harpreet Brar and Shashank Singh each claimed a wicket, but their efforts were not enough to prevent Hyderabad’s victory by 4 wickets.
Rain Spoiled the Game Again:
In the second match of the day at Barsapara Stadium, Rajasthan Royals were ready to face Kolkata Knight Riders in their final group stage game. Both teams were eager to play, but rain disrupted the proceedings. The toss was completed, with Kolkata Knight Riders choosing to bowl first, but the weather did not cooperate.
Persistent rain delays forced officials to wait, hoping for a break in the weather. Unfortunately, the match was ultimately abandoned without a single ball being bowled. Both teams were left disappointed as the rain washed out their final group-stage clash.
Changes in the Points Table:
The day was filled with some intense cricket action. After Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Punjab Kings by 4 wickets, they jumped up to the second place of the points table and secured the place. On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals slipped into the third position.
