Buchi Babu Tournament
The Buchi Babu All India Invitation Cricket Tournament, also known as the Buchi Babu tournament, has returned in 2024 after a six-year hiatus.
The domestic red ball tournament was first played in 1909 and was considered the biggest domestic tournament in India before the introduction of the Ranji Trophy in 1934.
The Buchi Babu Tournament is named after Mothavarapu Venkata Mahipathi Naidu, or Buchi Babu Naidu, who was a key figure in promoting cricket in the Madras Presidency.
He introduced the idea of a match featuring local players against British teams, which gave local talent a chance to shine. Unfortunately, Naidu passed away in 1908, just before the first tournament took place. The event started as a local club competition but became an invitational tournament in the 1960s, establishing its important place in Indian cricket.
