Jos Buttler Backs Impact Player Rule, Stresses All-Rounders’ Importance in IPL

England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, has expressed his support for the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite some criticism suggesting it undermines the role of all-rounders. Speaking to TOI, Buttler emphasised that all-rounders remain crucial for cricket teams, providing necessary balance and flexibility in both batting and bowling.

Buttler’s Support for All-Rounders

Butler reassured that the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to introduce an additional batter or bowler during the match, does not detract from the importance of all-rounders.

He highlighted that these multi-skilled players are essential for extending the batting lineup and offering diverse bowling options. “All-rounders are not a luxury but a necessity.

They play a significant role in balancing the side and impacting the game with both bat and ball,” Buttler said.

Excitement for McCullum’s Dual Role

In addition to his views on the Impact Player rule, Buttler shared his enthusiasm for Brendon McCullum’s upcoming role as England‘s head coach for all formats starting January 2025.

Buttler noted that having a single head coach across formats could offer consistent messaging but acknowledged the challenges posed by a busy cricket schedule.

He mentioned that while McCullum will be pivotal, there might be instances when assistant coaches will need to step in.
