Mumbai’s rising pace star, Mohammad Juned Khan, had a memorable debut with Ranji Trophy winners Mumbai during the Irani Cup 2024. His path to representing the Mumbai cricket team is a remarkable story of perseverance and dedication. Once an autorickshaw driver navigating the lively streets of Mumbai to support himself, Juned’s love for cricket and unwavering determination have propelled him to this significant achievement, showcasing his commitment to the sport.
Early Life of Juned Khan:
Born in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, Mohammad Juned Khan’s remarkable journey began just 120 km from where he made his debut. At the age of 14, he left his hometown not to chase cricket dreams, but to provide for his family. Initially, he found work in a jeans factory and later drove an autorickshaw from 2015 to 2018, which kept him occupied but far removed from the cricket field.
In 2014, Juned moved to Mumbai, coming from a farming background. After working as a helper in a jeans factory, he began driving an autorickshaw, using it as a means to support his family while still hoping for a better future. It wasn’t until 2019 that a chance encounter with the Sanjeevani Cricket Academy in Bandra East changed his life.
Under the guidance of former Mumbai wicketkeeper Manish Bangera, Juned took his first steps into formal cricket. Although he had mostly played with a tennis ball, he embraced the challenges of bowling with a cricket ball and received encouragement to pursue his passion further.
While recalling those initial struggle days, he said, “ I didn’t have money to buy spikes but many people helped me out and they backed me to keep playing regularly.”
He added, “ I got my licence of auto driving but didn’t have my card of the Mumbai Cricket Association, and even before I could apply for the same, the Covid struck the nation and everything came to a standstill for almost two years. But I never lost my focus and kept working hard on my fitness.”
Juned Khan’s Life-Changing Moment:
Juned Khan is another talented cricketer from Uttar Pradesh who opted to represent Mumbai instead of his home state, hailing from Kannauj, located about 127 km from Lucknow. His journey took a significant turn when he caught the eye of Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach of the Indian team and former assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders, during a match for the PJ Hindu Gymkhana in the Police Shield tournament.
He said, “It was my choice to play for Mumbai. In fact, I never tried to play cricket for anyone until 2019 when I met Abhishek Nayar Sir at his academy in Mumbai.”

He added, “After seeing my passion for cricket, Abhishek Sir told me to stop driving auto and stay focussed on cricket. It changed my life as I always wanted to be a fast bowler. He also assured me of all possible help. I didn’t have a bowling spike for a longer period I kept bowling, sporting rubber studs.”
His journey came full circle when he was recruited as a net bowler by the Kolkata Knight Riders under Abhishek Nayar’s mentorship. He continued to excel in local club cricket, participating in events organized by the Karnataka Cricket Association and the Bucchi Babu Tournament. His impressive performances in these tournaments ultimately led to his selection for his debut with Mumbai in the Irani Cup.
Juned Khan’s Dream Debut For Mumbai:
For Juned, receiving his team cap from skipper Ajinkya Rahane before the Irani Cup match against the Rest of India was a surreal moment. He expressed, “ I couldn’t sleep for two days after learning about my Mumbai debut here.”
A mix of nerves and excitement flooded his mind as he prepared to make his debut on the red soil pitch of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, where Mumbai had set a formidable first-innings total of 537.
When the Rest of India began their innings, Juned quickly found his rhythm. He struck early by dismissing opener and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for just 9 runs, forcing him onto the back foot. Prithvi Shaw skillfully completed the catch at fourth slip, marking a memorable start to Juned’s debut. He said, “ That was an amazing start for me and for a minute I couldn’t believe in myself.”
Mohammad Juned Khan, the young Mumbai pacer, feels inspired after taking his first career wicket in his debut match. This achievement has fueled his determination to establish himself in the upcoming Ranji Trophy, as he aims to leave a lasting impact on the tournament with his performances.
Who is Juned Khan’s inspiration?
Juned believes this is merely the start of his cricketing journey. When asked about his idol, he immediately mentioned, “Mohammed Shami.” Aspiring to emulate Shami’s style as a fast bowler, Juned found the opportunity to observe Team India’s Mukesh Kumar during the match to be incredibly valuable, providing him with important insights to enhance his own game.
He said, “ You always learn from your seniors, and it was quite exciting to see Mukesh bhai bowling here. I am bowling somewhere around 130 kmph but wish to increase it to 140-145 kmph at the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.”
