Major update on Usman Khawaja’s jaw injury

Usman Khawaja, the Australian opener, has received initial clearance from concussion and jaw fracture after being struck by a bouncer from Shamar Joseph during Australia’s 10-wicket victory over West Indies in Adelaide. The incident occurred when Australia needed just one run to win the match.

The blow, which hit Khawaja on the right side of his jaw, came from a short ball delivered from around the wicket. Despite losing sight of the delivery and attempting to turn his head, Khawaja was struck as the ball brushed across his chest. Following the impact, he was assessed by the team doctor on the field and subsequently retired hurt.

Cricket Australia confirmed that Khawaja passed an initial concussion test in the dressing room. Further examinations, including scans to check for any structural damage to his jaw, were conducted and revealed no fractures. However, Khawaja will need to undergo another concussion test on Saturday to determine his readiness for the second Test in Brisbane, which commences on January 25. The possibility of delayed concussion remains, and should he fail the test, he would enter a protocol period of five to eight days, casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming match.

Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, provided an update on Khawaja’s condition, stating that he seemed okay despite experiencing some discomfort in his jaw. Notably, Khawaja was struck on the only day when Australia did not have a spare batter at the ground. Matt Renshaw, who was given clearance to play in the BBL Qualifier for Brisbane Heat against Sydney Sixers, remains the next in line to replace Khawaja in Brisbane if necessary. However, this may affect Renshaw’s availability for other BBL finals if required by the Heat on Monday and Wednesday.

As Khawaja continues to be monitored, his recovery will be a key focus for the Australian team, especially considering the upcoming Test match against West Indies.
