Delhi Capitals have named the captain ahead of the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL. Star Australian batter and 4 world cup winning captain Meg Lanning will be leading the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Indian Premier League. Jemimah Rodrigues is named as her deputy.
Lanning was very happy to be a part of the franchise and is keen to lead the side. She also said that the WPL is a massive moment in the sport and it will keep growing in the coming years.
“It’s a very proud moment for me, firstly to be involved with Delhi Capitals and then to lead them. It’s about enjoying yourself, getting the best out of yourself.
“WPL is a massive moment for the sport, it’s the logical next step and makes a lot of sense. Cricket in India is people’s lives and the fact that WPL is up and running, and to be involved in something like this, is amazing. It’s only going to grow in the coming years.“
Lanning’s record in international cricket
Meg Lanninng is one of the best captains in world cricket. Meg Lanning made history by winning the most International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies as captain. Lanning reached this milestone on Sunday, when her team defeated South Africa in the Women’s T20 World Cup final. She has won a total of five competitions as a captain. The ICC Cricket World Cup in 2022 and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2014, 2018, 2020, and 2023 are two of these competitions. She now holds the record for being the sport’s most decorated captain.
As a batter, she has scored 3405 runs with a strike rate of 116.37 in 132 T20Is. She has led the side for over 100 times in her international career.
Lanning-led Delhi Capitals will lock horns against Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 5 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
