Ravichandran Ashwin Hails Jacob Bethell as a “Generational Talent”; Sees Kohli as RCB’s Captain for IPL 2025

Team India’s star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels that Jacob Bethell could be a generational talent. Bethell was recently bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2025 Auction for Rs. 2.6 crore.

Ashwin Calls Bethell a Generational Talent

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “Jacob Bethel could be a Generational talent.” Bethell recently made his Test debut for England last week. He scored his maiden fifty in the second innings as England won the game by 8 wickets. Bethell has also featured in 8 ODIs and 7 T20Is for England.

In 8 ODIs, he has scored 167 runs at an average of 27.83. He also has 4 wickets in the format. However, his T20I numbers are far more impressive. In just 7 T20Is, the all-rounder has scored 173 runs at an average of 57.33. He also has a best of 62 not out in the format.

Ashwin feels that if groomed properly, Bethell could be a talent to look out for.

Virat Kohli Should Captain RCB: Ashwin

Turning the focus on to the IPL, Ashwin didn’t shy away from sharing his views on the void of leadership at Royal Challengers Bangalore. Following Faf du Plessis’s exit from the franchise, Ashwin expressed that the most logical leadership candidate for IPL 2025 is Virat Kohli.

“In all likelihood, I think Virat Kohli is going to captain that side,” Ashwin commented, addressing the speculation. “They haven’t gone for a captain in the auction, and I don’t see anyone else in that role.”

Kohli, who stepped down from RCB’s captaincy in 2022, briefly reclaimed the mantle in 2023 when du Plessis was sidelined with an injury.

Ashwin Praises RCB’s Auction Strategy

Ashwin also praised RCB’s calculated approach in the IPL 2025 auction. While other franchises bid early, RCB played the waiting game. Their focus was on addressing the issues the faced in the last few seasons.

“I think they had a terrific auction,” Ashwin said.  “They targeted their core players and stayed true to their strategy. Even though they had the option to use RTMs (Right to Match cards), they didn’t overcommit. Instead, they picked players who fit their overall game plan.”, Ashwin concluded.
