Ricky Ponting, DC’s head coach, is considering deploying Prithvi Shaw as an opener for their forthcoming match against CSK at Vizag Stadium on March 31. This move may inject a new energy into the team’s batting lineup, offering a different strategy. Ponting’s discussions indicate a proactive approach to enhance the team’s performance and adjust to their opponent’s challenges. Shaw’s debut has been postponed as Delhi opted for David Warner and Mitchell Marsh as their opening pair in the first two games.
Ricky Pointing on Prithvi’s Availability in The Upcoming Match:
In his pre-match media interaction before DC’s encounter with CSK, Ponting reiterated his endorsement of Shaw, underscoring the commitment Shaw has demonstrated. Additionally, Ponting pointed out that Shaw’s absence from the starting lineup in the initial two matches was primarily due to the team’s configuration rather than any shortcomings on Shaw’s part.
He said, “Yeah, he’s (Shaw) definitely pushing for it. He has worked hard in the last couple of weeks. Obviously, our team make-up in the first game without obviously (Anrich) Nortje being in allowed us to play four overseas batsmen. So by doing that, we pushed Mitchell Marsh to the top of the order, which pushed Prithvi out of the side.”
Shaw’s Possibility in Playing 11 in DC vs CSK:
Ponting discussed Shaw’s potential inclusion in the team, noting that his selection would depend on his performance in the upcoming training session. He stressed the importance of Shaw’s readiness and form, indicating that his ability to contribute effectively to the team’s goals would be evaluated. Ponting’s remarks suggested a meticulous approach by the management in assessing players’ suitability for matchday roles, promoting competition within the squad. This aligns with Ponting’s coaching philosophy of meritocracy and adaptability in team composition.
Pointing said, “So, yeah, we’ll have a really good look at Prithvi at training and see how well he plays in the nets. And if he impresses everybody today, we’ll definitely consider him for selection.”
He also said, “We feel that a really good game is just around the corner for us. In fact, I am sure we will have a more positive intent going into this game.”
Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are the only two franchises in IPL 2024 yet to secure a victory. Despite their efforts, DC’s decision to retain Ricky Bhui in the top order has not yielded positive results, with the batsman managing only 3 runs across two matches.
With this underperformance, Prithvi Shaw is eager to showcase his abilities as a top-order batsman for DC. The head coach exudes confidence in the team’s prospects of securing their first win of the season. As they prepare to face Chennai Super Kings (CSK), DC aims to leverage their home advantage and secure valuable points in the standings.
