In a heartwarming display of camaraderie and unity within the Indian cricket team, captain Rohit Sharma extended a gracious gesture to KL Rahul during the presentation ceremony of the third ODI against Australia. Despite India losing the final ODI, the moment symbolized the team’s solidarity and respect for their fellow players.
Series Victory Under KL Rahul’s Captaincy:
India had already secured the ODI series with victories in the first two games, both of which were led by KL Rahul. While Rohit Sharma returned as captain for the third ODI, Rahul’s leadership in the initial matches played a crucial role in the series win. During the presentation ceremony, commentator Harsha Bhogle revealed that Rahul was present at Rohit’s request to collect the series-winning trophy.
KL Rahul’s journey within the Indian cricket leadership group has been a rollercoaster ride. Interestingly, he was dropped as the vice-captain during the series against Australia in 2023. However, his stellar performance in the Asia Cup paved the way for his return to the leadership group. It’s worth noting that for the upcoming ICC World Cup, Hardik Pandya is the designated vice-captain, and Rahul won’t be part of the leadership group during the tournament.
Looking Ahead to the World Cup:
While India faced defeat in the third ODI, it should not raise concerns, given that several key players were unavailable due to illness or rest. The team will have all players back in contention for selection in the warm-up game against England on Saturday (September 30).
One significant decision that India must make before the ICC event is whether to include R Ashwin in the squad. Ashwin showcased his skills in the first two ODIs against Australia and is a potential replacement for the injured Axar Patel. Axar was ruled out of both the Asia Cup final and the Australia series due to an injury. As of now, there is no official update on Ashwin’s inclusion, and the final squad announcement is expected by the end of Thursday (September 28).
