Dinesh Karthik has lauded the SA20 as the second-best league after the IPL. Dinesh Karthik, representing the Paarl Royals, created history by becoming the first-ever Indian cricketer to play in the SA20 league. The wicketkeeper-batter made his debut during the match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Boland Park on Saturday, a moment he described as a proud milestone.
Karthik, who is currently part of the Royals’ squad in the third edition of the SA20, spoke about the league’s growing stature and why he decided to join the tournament.
“Second-Best T20 League After IPL”
During an on-field chat with commentators, Karthik explained why he chose to play in South Africa’s premier T20 league.
“I wanted to play here because it’s highly competitive and stands right after the IPL in terms of quality,” Karthik said while keeping wickets for the Paarl Royals.
The 37-year-old, who has played in various T20 leagues worldwide, sees the SA20 as a top-tier competition. “The quality of cricket here is amazing, and the fans create a fantastic atmosphere,” he added.
A Historic Moment for Indian Cricket
Karthik’s participation marks a significant moment in SA20 history. Despite the league being partly funded by IPL franchises, no Indian cricketer had played in the SA20 until now.
“I am very proud to be the first Indian cricketer to play in this league,” Karthik shared with SportsBoom.com. “I’ve always wanted to play in a league outside India, and I believe I’ve chosen the best one. The Pink Army has welcomed me warmly, and it’s been a fantastic experience so far.”
Growing Interest in SA20
Karthik believes that more Indian players could follow in his footsteps. With the league gaining traction back home, he sees it as a valuable opportunity for cricketers once their IPL commitments end.
“Why not? Anyone who has finished playing in the IPL can look at the SA20. It’s the strongest competition with top players. Playing in front of passionate crowds brings out the best in you,” Karthik said.
The SA20 is already gaining popularity in India, with matches being broadcast on top channels. “The recognition is growing, and with each season, the league is getting stronger,” he added.
