Young batting sensation, Shubhman Gill, who smashed a century against Bangladesh on Friday, said that India is working on batting against spin.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, India’s batting line up was seen struggling against the spin bowling attack of Sri Lanka, Which was led by Under-19 spin sensation Dunith Wellalage.
Sundar in place of Axar
On Saturday, all rounder Axar Patel was left out of the final of Asia cup due the injuries he sustained in the match against Bangladesh. Another spin all rounder, Washington Sundar was called up to replace him.
This gives a clear message that India are currently not paying attention to one of the best test all rounders, Ravi Ashwin for their world cup challenge.
Inclusion of Sundar indicated that India is looking to harness their lower order batting. Which looked somewhat weak against Bangladesh on friday. Sundar’s batting abilities were first time recognized in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Australia in 2020-21. Since then, his batting abilities have given him an upper hand during the selection process.
To tackle the woes of Indian batting against spin becomes very important ahead of the World Cup. Where India is scheduled to play its arch-rivals Australia in M Chidambaram, which is a slow track.
Shubhman Gill Comments on India’s Batting
While interacting with the press Gill tells that Indian batters having been working hard to tackle the spin problem. He said, “It is not a concern. But it is definitely an area that we are trying to improve on. We had a camp in Bangalore before coming here, and we were practising on similar wickets,”
Gill’s innings of 121 was not enough to take India home against Bangladesh on friday. While explaining the nuances of batting on a slow track, the young batter further explained; ‘We know the World Cup is such a long tournament as we go deeper into the tournament, the wicket tends to get slower. But yeah, it is not easy for batsmen who are coming in to rotate the strike and minimise those dot balls and that’s what as a batting unit and bowling group that we are looking to work on.”
The opening batter also weighed upon the fact that winning the final against Sri Lanka in Asia cup is extremely important to gain momentum. “Winning here will give us a lot of momentum and confidence going into the World Cup,” he said.
