On Tuesday, Shubman Gill became just the second Indian hitter to reach 700 runs or more in an IPL season. In 15 innings so far this season, Gill has scored 722 runs. Thus, the 23-year-old player joins Royal Challengers Bangalore and India player Virat Kohli on the list. He also becomes the youngest player to score 700 plus runs this season.
The other Indian to reach the mark is Kohli, who scored 973 runs during the 2016 IPL season. The most runs ever recorded by a batter in an IPL season were scored by Kohli in the 2016 season.
The season so far has been fantastic for Shubman Gill. In his 15 IPL innings so far, the Gujarat Titans hitter has managed four fifties and two centuries. And on Tuesday, May 23, Gill attained yet another exceptional milestone in Qualifier 1 between GT and CSK.
Kohli and Gill: Matching each others’ record
The only players with multiple hundreds this year are Gill and Kohli. Kohli managed 100 against SRH and 101 against Gujarat Titans. In contrast, Gill scored a brilliant 101 off 58 balls against SRH before going unbeaten for 104 off 52 balls the very next inning against RCB.
Despite having 639 runs at the end of the IPL season, Kohli won’t be able to add more since his side, RCB, were eliminated from the competition. Gill is presently ranked second in the Orange Cap standings with 722 runs. The RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis, who presently holds on to the Orange Cap by a whisker, is only 8 runs behind the GT batter.
Gujarat Titans (GT), the defending champions, finished first in the IPL 2023 points standings after winning ten of their last 14 league games. On the other hand, the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a spectacular comeback in the league this time around, finishing second on the rankings after placing ninth the previous year.
It’s interesting to note that during the competition’s existence, Chennai, a four-time champion, has never defeated GT. But because MS Dhoni is regarded as a master of this format, it will be fascinating to watch Dhoni’s strategy in the upcoming match.
