The face-off between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi with Bangladesh having won the toss and opting to bowl first. The Sri Lankans amassed a target of 280 runs for the Bengal Tigers with Charith Asalanka having smashed his first ton of the 2023 World Cup with 110+ runs. Bangladeshi bowlers Shakib Al Hasan and Shoriful Islam both took 2-2 wickets each dismissing Sri Lankan batters. With Bangladesh yet to bat, it is still to witness which team will emerge victorious in today’s match. However, a rare yet flabbergasted moment was witnessed during the first innings which featured Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews.Â
Mathew’s dismissal after getting timed out!
When Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed for 41 runs off 42 balls, Angelo Mathews walked in to bat when his helmet’s strap got broken with him waiting for a replacement. Taking into the fact the 3-minute rule, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for Mathew’s wicket which was agreed to after an intense discussion within the umpires. After the umpire’s decision, Mathew left the field in aggression after throwing his bat and helmet.
What does the law say?
Regarding the 3-minute rule, when a batter does not make it to the field after a certain player’s wicket, he is liable to be dismissed. The law says “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
With this bizarre incident, Angelo Mathew became the first player to get timed out in the history of the World Cup. Earlier, during an international series in 2006 between South Africa and India, Sachin Tendulkar arrived late to the field after India rapidly losing 2 wickets that followed his dismissal.
