Sunil Gavaskar believes that Rohit Sharma will step down as India captain if his poor form continues in the Austrian series. He highlighted Rohit’s deep commitment to Indian cricket.
Gavaskar: Rohit Likely To Step Down As captain
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar made a striking claim regarding Rohit Sharma’s future as India’s Test captain. Gavaskar suggested that Rohit may step down voluntarily if his batting struggle persisted. In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma has failed to make an impactful score against Australia.
The comments came amid the scrutiny over Rohit’s poor form. In his last 13 Test innings, the Indian skipper has scored only 152 runs. He has scored a strong fifty with an average rate of 11.83. His struggle has continued in Australia, where he has been pushed down to No.6 for batting.
Gavaskar’s Strong Statement
During an interview with ABC Sport, on Day 5 of the Third Test in Brisbane, Gavaskar made a strong statement regarding Rohit Sharma. He said Rohit is likely to take matters into his own hands if his poor performance continues in the remaining matches in Melbourne and Sydney.
“I think Rohit will obviously get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” Gavaskar stated.
The former captain praised Rohit’s integrity, highlighting his commitment to Indian cricket. Gavaskar added, “He’s a very conscientious cricketer. He will not want to be a burden on the team.”

“So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.”
Questions On Rohit’s Leadership
Rohit Sharma’s recent form has sparked debate. The 37-year-old struggles in the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand and his difficulties have continued in Australia also.
During the Brisbane Test, his dismissal to Pat Cummins and a viral moment involving Rohit leaving his gloves has sparked speculation over his future.
Gavaskar believes Rohit would make the decision independently rather than waiting for the selectors.“If he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down,” he remarked.
With critical Tests ahead, all eyes are now on Rohit’s performance and whether he can rediscover his form to silence critics and lead the team from the front.
