Surendra Harmalkar secured a decisive victory over Deepan Mistry in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Apex Council election held on Wednesday, September 18. Harmalkar earned 185 votes compared to Mistry’s 95, with one vote declared invalid. This win marks Harmalkar’s entry into the MCA Apex Council, succeeding Abhay Hadap, who recently assumed the role of MCA secretary.
This election comes amidst a series of changes within the MCA, following the death of former president Amol Kale in June. In July, Ajinkya Naik, former MCA secretary, won the presidential election, defeating vice-president Sanjay Naik. Naik’s ascent to the top post followed intense competition, with the latest election further shaping the future leadership of Mumbai cricket.

Speaking after the results were announced, Ajinkya Naik highlighted the strong support received from various quarters. “Once again, the maidan, office, school, and college club secretaries have demonstrated their positive influence in securing this election win. This marks the third consecutive victory for our group, and we remain committed to the growth and development of Mumbai cricket. The support of both men’s and women’s cricketers was evident in this election,” he said in a statement.

The MCA has seen an unusually high number of elections in recent months, with this being the third election since June. Hadap, who Harmalkar is replacing, had earlier defeated Suraj Samat, a candidate backed by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, to claim the secretary position.
This wave of elections signifies a new era for Mumbai cricket, as the association continues to navigate transitions and ensure the growth of the sport in the city. Harmalkar’s role within the Apex Council will be closely watched as he takes over key responsibilities at a time of significant organizational changes within the MCA.
