The under-construction Varanasi Cricket Stadium is expected to be ready by 2025, positioning itself to potentially host a match in the T20 World Cup 2026. This prestigious tournament will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with the stadium in Varanasi slated to be one of the new venues making its debut on the international cricket stage.
Stadium Construction Progress
The foundation stone for the Varanasi Cricket Stadium was laid in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The stadium is being built near the Ring Road in Rajatalab, Varanasi, with a budget of around ₹450 crore. Spread over more than 30 acres, the stadium’s architecture will reflect the heritage of Varanasi, with a gallery inspired by the steps of the city’s famous ghats and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The Uttar Pradesh government has invested ₹121 crore for land acquisition, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contributing ₹330 crore towards construction costs. Once completed, it will become the third international cricket stadium in Uttar Pradesh, joining the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow and the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Hosting T20 World Cup 2026
The T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled for the February-March window, a shift from the June 2024 edition held in the USA and the Caribbean. This tournament will once again feature 20 teams battling for the coveted title, beginning with the group stage, followed by the Super Eight, semi-finals, and the grand final.

Varanasi Cricket Stadium, if completed on time, is likely to host at least one match of the tournament. A BCCI official has indicated confidence in the venue’s readiness, with construction progressing on schedule. Hosting a World Cup match would place Varanasi firmly on the global cricket map and contribute to the development of sports infrastructure in the region.
Impact on Local Cricket and Infrastructure
The addition of Varanasi Cricket Stadium will enhance Uttar Pradesh’s standing in the cricketing world, allowing it to host more international matches. The state has previously staged high-profile matches, with Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium hosting multiple fixtures during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium also holds a rich history, having hosted World Cup matches in 1987 and 1996.
The new stadium’s design, with cultural elements inspired by the city’s religious and historical significance, will make it a unique venue for fans and visitors alike. It is expected to hold a capacity crowd, catering to the growing demand for live cricket in India.
